KAT, an ITSLanguage product

Justification of choices

In recent years, the KAT has continued to develop. Together with professionals in the field - from Auris to the sounding board group members - we continue to work on further improvement of the KAT. On this page we substantiate the choices that have been made.

Self-marking assimilation

24-09-2024

The KAT cannot always determine for itself whether assimilation has occurred without additional context. Moreover, the cases identified by the KAT as assimilation may be inaccurate in some cases. We therefore offer the ability to mark assimilation cases in the input yourself. When you do this, the KAT will no longer perform automatic analysis of assimilation. How to mark assimilation yourself in the input is described in the e-learning.

/pj-/ is a cluster

25-05-2024

/pj/ is now considered a cluster rather than a consonant. The sounds /p/ and /j/ differ too much in articulation to consider it one phoneme. You are making a place shift here.

Support of medial sounds

15-10-2024

Consonants that follow a short vocal and are interpreted as medial consonants in spontaneous language were previously considered initial consonants by the KAT. This led to incorrect percentages in the analysis. Linguists using the KAT had to make manual corrections as a result to arrive at reliable percentages. To solve this problem, the KAT now offers the ability to mark medial sounds themselves in the input. The KAT does not automatically detect these medial sounds. The e-learning describes how to mark medial sounds in input yourself.
